Buffalo never tasted so good! Better eating habits such as choosing Buffalo instead of beef has many health improving features and healthy never tasted so good. Although changing eating habits is generally reserved for the Baby Boomer age bracket younger people and children are becoming more aware of the alternatives to just eating junk food. With the number of obese increasing each day medical practitioners and authorities have begun recommending alternatives such as buffalo to their clients.
Lower fat content is one of the many benefits derived from eating buffalo. Cooking time is greatly reduced and the flavor is excellent. Many upper scale restaurants are now offering buffalo as a choice of meat giving you alternatives when dining out. Buffalo was even a meat choice featured on Hell’s Kitchen TV Show just last evening.
Recently visiting a northern Maryland bison ranch sparked my interest in providing better alternatives and creative ways of improving what we eat. Take a moment and follow the slides of my trip. I must warn you that some of the photos will be disturbing because the animals were in the process of shedding their winter coats. They have not been mistreated in anyway. As you will see rolling in the dirt helps them remove the longer winter coat but that generally takes them a few days.
As I looked out over the hillside with the buffalo roaming in the pastures I was captivated by their beauty and yet fearful of their powerful strength. An average weight of 1500 pounds is not uncommon for these beautiful animals.
Buffalo is steadily growing as an healthy alternative food source and the continued growth has allowed the operation of farms across the United States. Morris’ Choice Bison Ranch was originally an Angus beef farm for a number of years before switching to Buffalo. Buffalo Rob, as I call him, has developed many innovative farming methods to maintain and grow his herd. He explained that he is striving to grow his Buffalo in as natural organic setting as possible. And I must say that was easy to see.
Buffalo meat can be shipped anywhere in the Continental United States. The baby boomer generation has taken to choosing it as an alternative to the meat products available and local farms such as Morris’ Choice Bison Ranch have begun to fill their requests. Stay tuned for additional information on alternative eating and see why others say, “Buffalo, never tasted so good!”
