I was internet surfing today when I came across an article that really made me start thinking about old wives’ tales. When I was a young girl I was surrounded by old wives’ tales from every corner. It doesn’t happen as much today because of all the advancements in medicine, health, fitness and the general lifestyles we lead. Plus I think the youth of today just ignores most of what their ‘elders’ say.
I remember my grandfather used to put turpentine on cuts to heal them….OUCH! And when I had a horrible cold one year I was subjected to glazed onions on the chest at bedtime. If a fever was worryingly high I received a raw onion on the bottom of each foot held by my sock…it was really hard to sleep with them but… you did what you were told.
As I grew up, married and had a child I did not practice the old wives tale things that my mother and her mother before her had done in the past. Instead I chose to take my son to the doctor’s for a bad cold or temperature. In the end I paid a lot more money then I would have if I had just put onions on his chest at bedtime and onions on his feet.
